These are birds we have observed in and near our home in Madison County, Indiana. Most have been found in the city of Anderson along the banks of Killbuck Creek and White River, or in Shadyside Park, including the wetlands and the Shadyside Lakes. For a detailed, annotated map of the area see map and directions.
Two Northern Shoveler Ducks feed in the Killbuck Wetlands. The one on the right is the most typical pose, with head beneath the water while it probes the muddy bottom with its broad bill. See Shoveler Ducks for more pictures of these unusual birds.
A Clouded Sulfur butterfly enjoys a warm November day. The silver spot with two circles of red is the key identifying mark. More butterflies and some birds may be seen at Winged Creatures.
Junior, our resident father Barred Owl has followed his usual pattern by returning to the home tree for the winter. He is seen, above, sleeping peacefully on a bright November day. We have also found him roosting in other places this month. See Barred Owl for these pictures. For the history of this family of owls, see Barred Owl Family History.
This Nuthatch is thinking he's pretty lucky at the moment. He has just discovered a treasure trove of meal worms in Mick Hardy's feeder. But, there's about to be trouble. A pair of Bluebirds regard this as their private food supply. The rest of the story may be seen at Bluebirds.
A Muskrat chews on the bark of a tender twig in the middle of Killbuck Creek. See Furry Creatures for pictures of more wild creatures.
This Killdeer pauses in its hunt for food along the shore of Summit Lake. We found several Killdeer at Summit Lake State Park in November. They may be seen at Killdeer.
