Indiana Waterfowl

A Great Blue Heron stalks fingerlings in the shallow water of the Killbuck Wetlands. It moves slowly and deliberately with its eyes and bill far out ahead of its feet, which might alarm the fish.

These male Canada Geese are standing sentry duty while the other members of the flock graze on the grass. This flock remains near Killbuck Creek summer and winter.

The American Coot spends its summers from the Great Lakes and northern plains northward into the Yukon Territory of Canada. Indiana is in the northern part of its winter range which extends southward to the Gulf and Mexico.

The Mute Swan is a species introduced from Europe. This one is on a pond near Shadyside Lake.

These Mallard Ducks are feeding off the bottom in the Killbuck Wetlands. They are year-round residents of Indiana. Here a female is seen between two males.
