Shoveler Ducks

A pair of Northern Shovelers, right, feeds in the Killbuck Wetlands while a first-fall male Shoveler is on the left. Note the black bill on the adult male while the female and first-fall male have orange bills. The bill on the youngster is starting to turn black.

Here are two adult male Shovelers. Note the black bills and orange legs.

Here is a study in contrast between female Mallard (left) and a male Shoveler (right). The Shoveler is smaller and has a larger bill. We seem to have at least two pairs of Shovelers and a few unpaired Shovelers staying in the Wetlands. They have been here for more than a month, but may move on when ice starts to form.

Not Shovelers, these three Wood Ducks, two males and a female, are part of a small group making their way up Killbuck Creek in mid-November. They were the last flock to gather in Killbuck Creek before departing for warmer climates.
