The Carolina Wren has gradually become more common in Indiana over the past twenty years. Although they migrate, many have become year-round residents of Indiana. One is seen below with a Downy Woodpecker for size comparison.
Carolina Wrens have a "decurved" bill and are compact and stocky. They have a large repertory of songs and often can be distinguished more by the timbre of their voice than the song itself.
Carolina Wrens like to nest in sheltered locations such as beneath eves or in odd corners of houses. We have seen them build nests in hose reels and hanging flowerpots. They may raise as many as four hatches in one summer, starting in April.
