Indiana is locked in the grip of winter and the birds are not very active as they try to conserve energy and body heat. So we have journeyed to warmer climates in search of birds to photograph. This month we are featuring birds from central Florida. This adult Brown Pelican is one of many birds that we found. In spite of the sign, he looks well fed. The birds have demonstrated what they think of the sign in Hanna State Park. See Brown Pelicans for more pictures of these large birds.
A Great Egret hunts in the tall grasses and rushes of Payne Prairie Preserve State Park. For more of these magnificent birds, see Great Egrets.
While his mate keeps well hidden, Junior, the father Barred Owl, maintains his daily vigil from his favorite sycamore tree. Other birds that remain active in Madison County may be seen at Home Birds. For more information about our resident owls, see Barred Owl Family History.
An immature Bald Eagle wheels over the open scrublands of Payne Prairie Preserve State Park in central Florida. See Bald Eagles for more photographs of these living symbols of our country.
This Osprey has just landed on a branch with a partially eaten fish. See Florida Birds for more pictures of this and other birds we seldom find in Indiana.
A pair of Red-shouldered Hawks search the ground for prey from the high branches of a tree. See Florida Hawks for pictures of hawks in action.
A Snowy Egret displays its "golden slippers" as it feeds in a marsh in the Woodruff NWR. For more of these beautiful birds, see Snowy Egrets.
