The male Downy Woodpecker, above, is marked by a red stripe on the back of his head. Note the length and thickness of his bill as compared with the Hairy Woodpecker, below. The Hairy's bill is longer than its head and considerably thicker at the base.
Here again, the difference in the length and thickness of the bills can be compared between the Downy, above, and the Hairy, below. Hairy Woodpeckers are also a little larger than Downies, but a small Hairy and a large Downy are about the same size.
The difference in bills is especially striking in these two, again with the Downy above and the Hairy below.
