Feeder Birds I

This male Cardinal serves to remind us that birds not only need food, but open water in the winter. They need to drink, and an occasional bath helps them stay free of parasites.

This Carolina Wren looks for food in the shelter of an ice-covered feeder. Carolina Wrens were only summer visitors to Indiana 25 years ago, but they have taken to staying the winter in recent years.

An American Goldfinch, left, in winter plumage shares a feeder with a Chickadee, right.

A male Downy Woodpecker looks for insects in the bark of a tree.

A Red-breasted Nuthatch and a House Finch get seeds from a bird feeder. Thanks to Mick and Connie Hardy for the pictures on this page.

A juvenile Red-tailed Hawk keeps an eye on the birdfeeders for an easy meal. Life in the winter is hard on birds of all species and Mick would remind us all to keep our bird feeders filled, especially when snow covers the ground.
