Snow and ice crystals festoon the tree in which this male Cardinal rests.
This is a young Cowbird that didn't have sense enough to go south for the winter. Its shape is atypical for a Cowbird because it has its feathers fluffed up against the cold.
A Dark-eyed Junco surveys the wintry scene from a tree covered with ice crystals.
From a similar tree, a Red-breasted Nuthatch contemplates its next move. The ice crystals were formed by a heavy fog which coincided with subfreezing temperatures.
This Dark-eyed Junco has found shelter in an ice and snow covered pine tree. Our thanks to Mick and Connie Hardy for the pictures on this page.
