This male House Sparrow was unusually well marked. He is being buffeted by the wind (below) as he suns himself on a winter day. House Sparrows are year-round residents of the 48 states and much of Canada.
The American Goldfinch migrates. While Indiana is within both the summer and winter ranges, we see more of them in the winter. This is a male in dull, winter plumage. In March they grow out new feathers which are a bright yellow color on the male, giving them the name "American Canary."
