Woodpeckers

A female Red-bellied Woodpecker looks about alertly from the shelter of a honeysuckle bush on the shore of Shadyside Lake. Note the red streak on its belly, from which it gets its name.

A Pileated Woodpecker has been visiting Gracie Suko's suet feeder of late. Our largest woodpecker, these birds are very difficult to approach in the wild. We have seen only one this winter. Gracie was able to take these pictures through a window while staying out of sight. Our thanks to Gracie for these pictures.
