In his first summer, Junior was a most inquisitive little owlet. He liked to watch people and would sometimes follow us through the woods. On several occasions we found him at night in a tree at the edge of the woods, watching Little League baseball games being played under lights in the nearby park.
He often selected places for his daytime roost that were close to where people walked, but in the woods. He seemed to like people, or at least some people.
By October he had completed his first molt and began to look like an adult Barred Owl. For some reason, he did not disperse from the home territory, but stayed in the area.
Junior's father "Papa" returned to his wintertime roost in the sycamore tree in early November, as was his custom. His mate "Mama" remained discretely out of sight, as usual.
