Marked by the distinctive patch of red on their heads, Sandhill Cranes are easily identified. This pair is spending the winter near a pond in Central Florida. They may stay here the year around, or migrate north to the Great Lakes or Canada for the breeding season.
With a wingspan of 75," these are one of the larger North American species. Perhaps because of their size, they are less easily frightened by humans than smaller birds.
While more of a land bird than waterfowl, Sandhill Cranes seek the protection of shallow water for sleeping at night and are often found near bodies of water.
