Barred Owls are excellent parents. Here Penelope and Junior (right) watch as Annie (left) consumes a fish that her father has just brought to her.
Although he still has some fuzzy down left, little Arnold was becoming adventuresome by mid-June. Here he has landed high up in a large oak tree and is surveying the world from his lofty perch.
It is difficult to find Penelope in the open and even more unusual to be able to photograph multiple members of the family in one picture. Here, Penelope may be seen at the top of the picture, Arnold at the bottom of the picture, and Arthur just above and slight to the right of Arnold's head. Penelope and Arnold are about the same distance from the camera but Arthur is more distant. Arthur is busy grooming his breast. Annie was nearby on the forest floor chasing something.
Arnold and Arthur, the two brothers, could often be found together. Arthur is behind Arnold in this picture. This is behavior we have seen before in the male siblings.
Meanwhile, Annie was a loner, preferring to stay by herself.
Seven weeks after fledging, Arnold has most of his adult feathers with just a little fuzz left around his face and head. He will lose the rest of the fuzz in a couple of weeks.
Likewise, Arthur is looking much more mature and has achieved most of his growth.
