We were sure that Penelope was hatching one or more eggs in the spring of 2002 somewhere in the home grove, but never did locate the nest as there was much flooding of the Killbuck Creek bottoms that spring. Finally, on May 21, 2002, we spotted Penelope with her baby high up in a maple tree on the edge of Killbuck Creek. Penelope did a better job this spring of keeping herself and her babies hidden and despite many searches, we were unable to spot them again for more than a month.
Victoria was probably the first to hatch and was definitely the larger of the twin owl babies. Here she is on July 12, 2002, still with much of her baby down around her head.
We were confident that there were two babies from calls that we could hear in the woods. However, we never saw them both at the same time until late on the evening of July 13, 2002, when they were seen together in very dim light.
We named the younger of the two baby owls "Albert". He was a small but sturdy owl, much like his father at that age. This picture was taken on July 27, 2002.
