Hawk Attack

This is the victim of the Hawk's attack. It is a juvenile Mourning Dove. Except for a few ripped feathers on its back, it seems to have survived and soon flew away.

Here is a closer picture of the Cooper's Hawk that attacked the Dove. It is also a juvenile which probably explains why the dove was able to survive. Both have a lot to learn: the dove on how to avoid hawks, the hawk on how better to attack its quarry.

This hawk vs. dove drama took place in Los Angles, CA, where it was photographed by Maral Kazazian who kindly shared these pictures with us.

The Cedar Waxwing was kind enough to pose for pictures from the front and back. Note on the picture below, the yellow band at the end of the tail and the red tips on the wing feathers. Our thanks to the Hardys for these Cedar Waxwing pictures.
