Rodents

Chipmunks have to be constantly alert for attack. Not only are cats and other four-legged predators a constant threat, but hawks and owls prey on them too. When one is built so close to the ground, the horizon is very limited. Thus chipmunks often stand on their hind legs or scamper up trees for a short distance to see what's around them.

Having satisfied itself that there is no immediate threat, this chipmunk gets down to the business of looking for whole kernels of sunflower seeds among the many empty hulls that the birds have discarded.

We found this poor mouse near the White River. It is not the common field mouse and we don't know what kind it is. It is either a juvenile or injured in some way as it didn't seem able to move very well. We suspect that it was probably a meal for some larger animal or bird before the sun set. Such is nature's way.
