Wetland Birds

"Look, Brother, I can balance on this log on one leg." Actually, the immature female Wood Duck is just resting her right leg while standing on her left leg.

This Spotted Sandpiper is changing from its summer to winter plumage, although it's still August. Note the distinctive white stripe immediately in front of the wing in the photo below.

A mother Mallard Duck leads her three ducklings across the Killbuck Wetlands. August is very late for fledgling ducks.

The "home flock" of Canada Geese is enjoying the waters of the wetlands while a single male stands sentry duty in the lower-left hand corner of the picture. This flock stays around the Killbuck/Shadyside area the year around while other flocks tend to come and go.

This juvenile Catbird hasn't yet learned that Catbirds usually stay hidden in the bushes. We often hear them, or catch glimpses of them, but seldom see them in the open like this one.
